5 Ways the Ukulele is Awesome for Beginners
By Laurie Stone
Who knew? Good things do come in small packages – like the diminutive, but mighty ukulele. Many people have discovered this mini guitar is made for more than Hawaiian luaus and Elvis Presley movies. Some schools are adopting them in their music programs, not only for children to enjoy on their own, but also as a bridge to larger, more complex instruments. Here are 5 reasons to consider a ukulele for your budding musician…
Size
The “uke” is tailor-made for small hands and fingers. The necks come in several sizes, although most run short and narrow. Looking like a toy guitar, children are naturally attracted to it’s bright, happy sound. Even better, it’s easy for kids of any age to pick up and noodle about.
Popularity
Long part of Hawaiian culture, the ukulele is enjoying a surge around the globe. Even seniors are getting into the act. Mainly because it has four strings instead of six, chords are learned quickly and before you know it, you’re the next Don Ho! There are now even ukulele clubs around the world.
Price
A beginning ukulele can go for under $100, much less than a violin or cello. Before laying down lots of cash, this is an easy, inexpensive way to test the waters and see if you have a budding musician. (If not, there’s always mom, dad or even a sibling to pick up the slack).
Ease
With only four strings, ukuleles are easy to play. In just a few chords you have a song. And when you have a song, you have music. Many children gain confidence when they get one or two ditties in their repertoire and want to learn more. Even something this simple can ignite a lifetime love of playing.
Portable
Small and lightweight, the ukulele can be brought anywhere. Some kids pack it away in backpacks to be pulled out at sleepovers and parties. These little instruments are also surprisingly tough and durable. Some are even waterproof for the occasional, unexpected puddle. The ukulele also travels well through airports.
So what’s there not to like? When considering an instrument for your emerging musician, consider the tiny, but versatile ukulele. It has everything you’d want in a starter. It’s small, compact, easy, and most of all…fun.
